A Special Life

“I am conscious of a soul-sense that lifts me above the narrow, cramping circumstances of my life. My physical limitations are forgotten- my world lies upward, the length and the breadth and the sweep of the heavens are mine!”
- Helen Keller

"I call Emily my teacher, because although she can do so little, she has taught me so much." - John Weaver

You are probably visiting this website to learn more about Emily, or perhaps you're simply curious to know a bit more about living with disability and special needs in general. You may even have arrived here by doesn't matter...the most important thing is... you're here!

And we're delighted you are here.

To make the most of your visit and to be sure you come away feeling enlightened, please take time to check out all pages and links because a bigger picture will emerge and one that could change your heart and mind about many things.

Emily's life and our experiences are typical of many families and is presented here as just one example. My purpose for creating this website is to educate and inspire visitors to better understand and possibly help in some way. There are many charities and organisations that support people like Emily (some of which I have linked to this site) and which I hope you will visit. We are steadily improving the quality of life for many deserving people and your support could help make a real difference to our efforts and to their lives. You truly are that important.

You see, there is an amazing and profound world right inside the world we all know. It is a world that most people are not familiar with because everyone has to discover it for themselves. It is the world of disability and special needs, but more importantly it is a world of love, compassion, care and determination, where battles to improve lives and alleviate suffering are constantly being fought. And where some of the bravest and most inspirational people spend their days struggling the best they can, not only to enhance their own lives but to enhance our lives too.

I guarantee that your life can be improved just as mine has, simply by knowing, understanding, befriending and learning from these very special people. They are the best teachers there are and what they can teach you could be the most important lessons you will ever learn.

I thank you for your interest.

In friendship and in charity,

(P. S. My teacher sends her love)

“There are two kinds of 'disabled' persons: Those who dwell on what they have lost and those who concentrate on what they have left.”
-Thomas Stephen Szasz
